The early 1900s were very different from today. Toys, though they have evolved in many ways, were still the delight of children everywhere. Explore the history of toys, as charted by the History website.
Theodore Roosevelt’s Presidency marks the beginning of the “Teddy Bear.” In the year 1902, toy bears were named “Teddy” after the president’s nickname. The Teddy Bear became known world wide, and is still known and loved today. It was only a few years later when the Teddy Bears were mass produced.
Crayola crayons were made for the first time ever in 1903 by Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith.
In 1913, an item called the Erector Set was invented. It was a steel, motorized toy that children could use to build models of just about anything. Its creator was A.C. Gilbert, a medical doctor.
Charles Pajeau created a similar wooden set called Tinker Toys in the year 1914. Tinker Toys was made for younger children.
Raggedy Ann dolls first came on the scene after newspaper cartoonist Johnny Gruelle reproduced the doll he made for his daughter. That was in 1915.
The following year, an architect’s son named John Lloyd Wright, invented Lincoln Logs, which were interlocked to make structures.
Polystyrene was invented in 1927, and it is the kind of plastic that was used for making toys in the early days.
Two years after Mickey Mouse was created (which was in 1928), stuffed Mickey Mouse dolls were made by Charlotte Clark. This was the start of Disney merchandise.
The yo-yo became popular in the United States after Donald Duncan bought a yo-yo company in 1929.
Scrabble was developed from a game called Criss Cross, invented by Alfred M. Butts in 1931. It became known as Scrabble after James Brunot bought the rights from Butts, and trademarked the game with this new name. Now more than a million Scrabble games are purchased every year in North America.
In 1935, the Parker Brothers introduced Monopoly. This game is so popular today that there are many different clones of this game, many of which are just as popular.
The View-Master, a three dimensional viewer was developed by a camera enthusiast named William Gruber. The toy became popular when Gruber licensed Disney characters to make still, 3-D images from Disney movies and television programs.
Finally, in 1940, model airplanes were mass produced. They started out as a way for manufacturers to sell planes to the military, but later caught on as a toy.
The toys that we know and love today have had their roots from these ancient times. Isn’t it interesting to know that if it weren’t for all these creative people most of the games you know today, would never have been?

Jerky was first introduced by the South American (Peru) native tribe called the Quechua (part of the ancient Inca Empire) in 1550. The product (Ch’arki), was boned and defatted meat (deer, elk, or buffalo) cut into slices and rubbed with salt. This meat was rolled up in the animal’s hide for 10-12 hours and then sun dried or smoked over fires.
In South America, the Native Americans ate sun-dried venison and buffalo called tassajo, which was made with strips of meat dipped in maize flour, sun and wind dried, and then tightly rolled up into balls. North American Cree Indians mixed berries and suet (fat) with pounded cooked meat and pressed into concentrated small cakes to make pemmican.
Biltong came from pioneering South African forefathers who sun dried meat while traveling across the African subcontinent. Folklore has it that African tribesmen would place strips of venison under the saddles of their horses to tenderize and spice the meat! Seasoning became a blend of vinegar, salt, sugar, coriander and other spices.
The Indians and early settlers dried meat primarily from deer, elk or buffalo using salt, whatever spices they had and sun drying. As the Spanish arrived, the name evolved to charqui. Most travelers preferred to pound the charqui between large stones and boil it in water before eating. During ocean exploration and colonization, the Spanish sailors stocked the pacific islands with goats. What couldn’t be eaten would then be cut into strips and hung in their ships to air dry. When the Spanish Conquistadors invaded the Americas, they were surprised to see the natives of North America drying meat as well. Soon, the natives adopted the Spanish term, Charqui, only adding their accent; the word “jerky” first came to be.
North American Pioneers would first dry meat by hanging it on the outside of their covered wagon sun drying (2-3 days). Another method was to build a scaffold over a slow fire and smoke the strips. While the heat and smoke would complete the process in half a day, the smoking method required a stopover; it wasn’t long before awareness for disease and germs became prevalent and smoking became the norm.
Today jerky is made from thin strips of virtually any meat or from ground or chopped and formed meat. Manufacturers spice and dehydrate the product; some introduce smoke or using liquid smoke for flavoring.
People may ask what a fender skirt is. Fender skirts are additions for fenders that provide more protection for vehicles, trailers, fifth wheels as well as motor homes. Some of these may already have these equipped, others you may have to put them on once you buy them. There are also times when you may need to purchase replacement parts when yours get damaged. Some people even buy them for the added pizazz that having chrome parts on your vehicle can offer.
There are single axle skirts, as well as dual axle skirts. You can also purchase flared out products to add a little extra style to your ride. What do these actually do? Well for one thing, they can protect the outside of you vehicle, or recreation unit from getting damaged from rocks and other debris that can get kicked up and out by your wheels. They also help protect against mud and dirt, which can be a problem when traveling on rainy days.
Some fender skirts also keep rocks and other small objects from rattling around inside the fender, and deflect them back down to the ground, This is a good idea, because you wouldn’t want rocks continuously smacking into the tires, or putting dents in your fender, and the noise would be irritating at the very least. Because they are made to match up perfectly with your vehicle or RV, there is no worry about space or vibration in between the fender skirt and fender or outside of what you are trying to protect.
For trailers and other recreation applications, fender skirts are made from high impact ABS plastic, which can withstand much abuse. Most are available in white, or off white colors, and attach easily to existing fender wells. You can even get them customized for your own individual needs. You can order the same for your vehicle, but you can also order them in metal and chrome. There are some things that you need to do before ordering so that you get the right one the first time you order it.
The first place to start is by measuring the area where you need the fender skirt. You need the height and length, and then you need to write down where the existing bolt holes are, so the new unit matches up correctly. If you have a model number on the one that needs replacement, this will help you find the exact part you need.
It is a good idea to shop around for price and materials that are used, and if there is any warranty included. Then you have to consider shipping costs, as well as the company’s policy on returns. While everyone hopes that they will get the part they need, sometimes there is a mix up when ordering, or even breakage in transit. Being able to send them pack without having to pay extra is good.
The other thing you have to think about when buying fender skirts is price. Your average cost for a single axle model is around $100, but this price can go up depending on the style of skirt. Straight angles and simple designs are going to be cheapest; the more elaborate, the more expensive they will be.
Gainesville residents, intended visitors, and those considering residency, please beware! Our city’s heart is black and polluted. Since its creation in 1916, for use as a chemical treatment facility for wood products, especially telephone poles and railroad ties using creosote, the officially federally (EPA) registered Cabot-Koppers Superfund (or Brownfields) site has been steadily and cumulatively chemically polluting Gainesville, to the point where this travesty can now no longer be ignored, having become a serious threat to the very future of Gainesville itself as a once pleasant place in which to live, to be educated, and to do business. Lying just north-west of Downtown, the Cabot-Koppers site is STILL! being licensed by local authorities for the same industrial purpose, but it now uses an even more toxic and carcinogenic “chemical cocktail” known as Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA). This mix, used to protect “treated lumber”, is now known to present a major danger to Public Heath throughout the entire USA. This, and multiple other such pollutants from Koppers, are officially known to be about to pollute the city’s very own water supply – the Murphree Aquifer. These chemicals also constantly run off into the large Floridan Aquifer via a natural creek system. Moreover, toxic, dioxin-laden dust has only just been officially recognized as being yet another major pollutant, with dire consequences to the health of ALL Gainesville citizens, including students of the …
